Just reading online Yahoo morning news article headline with picture attached "Top 10 states you may not want to retire in" due to the very high property tax's. The picture with the article was very familiar and I realized in was a home in Manchester a town close to where I live. OMG I clicked and their we were #4 state of Vermont....followed closely by CT,MA,RI, rounding out the bottom 5 with ME and NY ...I think I'm all boxed in. Just doesn't seem right somehow...

Back to the beauty in life ....The Feathers and Berries Design to the left was my most popular design in 2011 hands down...looks so perfect their.... love it!

The Venetian Tile Design

This floorcloth has been "hands down" one of my most popular designs since I started making floorcloths 8 years ago. We've made it in many different color schemes to match each clients decor, a lot of which you can view right on this web site in :"The Clients Gallery"

In this particular floorlcoth we created a new twist to the outside border. We've taken some of the design elements in the center square motifs and reconfigured them to create a unique element of detail in the outside border. I think it adds a nice flair to the floorcloth over all . We've created it to match Pamela's decor and she thinks "It's wonderful".

Voila.....Springs here!!! With it a new design

Voila,........ Springs new Artichoke Design created for Lisa in Arlington VA......the smaller is a 4 x4 and the larger a 5 x 5 to fit exactly where she wants them and the colors we matched to her decor! As you can see from our last blog post
We finish with 5 coats of varnish, let it dry and ship them to her.

After you've chosen the colors that you like, and picked the design you prefer. We'll make you a sample much like the one shown here.
This sample happens to be exactly the same size as the floorcloth the clients wants 5 x 5.(only on paper). We used the colors the client choose and a new design we developed just for her.

And Then

We've begun her floorcloth ...actually 2
5 x 5 and a 4x4. Both similar designs different
borders . I didn't show you, but on the paper sample
(above) the reverse side was the 4 x 4 sample
design.....
All samples and design work come with the price of the floorcloth no extra charges or hidden fee's.

Winter's not done yet!

Just finished making another one! Jessica wanted the same design. So, 60 hours of detail painting with a liner brush and a small edge brush and this is what it looks like!
I love this wonderfully organic print, it gives me the inspiration to create outside the box. I'm such a "in between the lines" finicky sort . It's a challenge to let go!
The perfect example that a floorcloth can be literally anything you'd like it to be, match anything, it brings your entire room together.

Winter has kept me inside a lot this year and have used my time developing some new designs for you, will be posting them this Spring...

Happy Winter

It's snowing again! Winter is packing a punch this year
The ice storm earlier this week did not help the snow, it's all hard and icy, the dogs seem to be walking on top as only they can do.The crock pot is a permanent fixture on my counter these days nothing like a little comfort food to ideal away those Winter blues. Sounds like a song...ahhh

Meanwhile, in the studio we've been busy creating 3 beautifully clean, simple designs for Laura in Philadelphia they will be on their way very soon so I thought I'd give you a chance to see them on my studio table before they head out...I believe they will be going into her hallways which are painted the traditional" Philly Yellow" they will look terrific.Can't wait to see the "in situ" photos Laura!

New Design

A simple beautiful new design for us at Dunberry Hill . Jan and Mike picked these soft warm colors to match their decor . We based coated with a soft off white/cream and the alternating squares are a Cushing Green. The design on the border and squares are a taupe color along with a very deep
red (historical color called Plantation Red). We finished with black borders to give it all a very sharp /crisp look. The size is 6ft10 x 9ft 3 made with a very durable 100% cotton duck canvas #4 . Will soon be on it's way to it's new home in Massachusetts and we're hoping for an "in-situ" photo to share with you soon.

Feathers and Berries goes Octagon!

A great Octagon going to Md to a very sweet Bungalow.
This is 8 ft x 8 ft we measure point to point. and the squares are 9 inch in diameter making them fit almost perfectly in this space with a 8 inch
wide border. The lighter squares are a rag off textured effects which gives the floorcloth a lot of depth . we have highlights on the design motifs and the berries.
Was made with 100% cotton Duck Canvas #4 weight finished with 5 coats of a very durable

Running Diamonds

Today I completed this lovely floorcloth for a couple in Alaska (somewhere I've always wanted to visit). The thought of delivering it to them myself has crossed my mind..
We matched the colors in their kitchen and the pattern of the diamonds is something that is on their kitchen door so they realized when I sent samples that this was the pattern that worked for them. The colors themselves greens,blues,and
yellow work extremely well together.5 coats of varnish and off to Alaska!

14 feet long a big one!

This floorcloth is The Feathers and Berries design which seems to be a big hit as of late.
We will be shipping it soon to a lovely spot
in the mountains of Virginia. It is a 14ft x 9ft floorcloth and I believe it will be in a big open area kitchen /dinning room hopefully we'll get some "in situ' photos to share with you in the next blog.

Meanwhile, we have a few other pieces in the works and a new web site which I hope will be up and running this Fall sometime we are very excited!

One other note for your calendar we will be in Massachusetts this October for a craft fair stay tuned for details.

Thought I'd share a few photos of recent floorcloths I've made, in the actual homes of my clients. This is the most exhilarating part for me,l and the client has now achieved that great new look in her home. We do a lot of back and forth with sampling and matching colors before we actually produce the floorcloth making the finished floorcloth really even more rewarding for me and my client. Enjoy!

A lovely 6.8 x 8.8 floorcloth the very first I could hand deliver. To a beautiful old historic home in Grafton Vermont. The customers can not be nicer and it looks lovely in the bedroom Mark spent his childhood growing up in. The colors are a Georgian brick and Antique yellow blending with the painted wide pine floor boards nicely.

"Sizzlin" Summer

The floorcloth to the right is the Running Diamonds design. We matched our clients colors of blues, greens and yellows.The base is done in a parchment style effect in shades of blues. We're looking forward to seeing the picture" in situ" in her lovely foyer.

The floorcloth to the left is the traditional Pineapple design for a lovely couple in Virginia they are putting it in their kitchen I believe. With a full complement of dogs and kids perfect for a floorcloths durability!

The French Country design in a lovely rag off blue to match my clients kitchen counter top's. The beige and red colors match a wing back chair that's in her kitchen. Will share the "in situ' pictures when we receive them....

So, far Summer is sizzilin both in work and temp's .

Good morning to all that reads this little blip.....We're a little behind
I mean well but can never quite get to blogging.

The Open Studio in Vermont over Memorial Day weekend was a huge success
I was pleasantly surprised by all the very interesting people that stopped by to
see what I was working on. We had both studios open with many projects going in
all different phases of completion along with my tent exhibiting many of my designs.
The weather cooperated and so did my dogs!

Just finished this 9.5 x 8 ft elongated Octagon I guess you could say. It's a slight adaptation
of the Durant design which is an an old historical stencil in Mr. Edward Durant's home I believe in Massachusetts's. It will be going to Maine to a very old historical home the perfect place. Stay tuned for pictures "in situ".

Open Studio

Through out the entire state of Vermont, for the Artisans that choose to participate
it's Open Studio Memorial Day weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday
the 29 th and 30 th from 10:00 to 5:00 all 268 (this year) Artists open their studios
to visitors. Displays of their crafts are for sale but some also
demonstrate the process it takes to make it.Please, if your in Vermont stop by my

Steps to creating the floorcloth you'll love

First thing to consider is placement. A floorcloth can go anywhere, some of the most frequent places are in the dinning room, in front of the kitchen sink or in the foyer or hall.
Second thing to consider are your dimensions. Simply measure the space, you are not limited to standard rug sizes we can accommodate any dimension.
Third element to consider is color. Look around at your wall colors,trim colors , upholstery,wallpaper,tile any of the colors in that space we can match or blend into the floorcloths design. I'll send you color swatches to help in the decision process.
The fourth thing to consider is the design itself. You can pick from the floorcloth gallery on my web site, or you might have a pattern you love from your upholstery, curtains or wherever . We now take your colors along with the design and make samples, that you can actually put in your home.

Bringing all the elements together colors,design,size we can create samples we can change, rearrange until we have the perfect floorcloth just for your home.

The quality of a floorcloth......

Shopping for a floorcloth is really quite the same as shopping for an
appliance or furniture,curtains or even a car you look for one that's going to last
be durable and is something you really like.
Not ever floorcloth is made the same.
Important facts you should consider prior to buying a floorcloth would be:

What type of canvas and the quality of the canvas and if you can get a sample of it.
How the edges and corners of the floorcloth are finished... Sewn ? Glued ? Will they fray over time?
How the canvas is shrunk you don't want ripples. You want a smooth, laying flat on your floor,
floorcloth.
Ever floorcloth maker has their own little techniques just like every chef makes bouillabaisse differently or whatever, it's their own unique style. It sets you apart from everyone else.

Remember the quality of the ingredients has a direct influence on the durability and life of your floorcloth. So, when you are shopping for a floorcloth don't let the price or the design be your only guide to buying it .
Quality ingredients =quality floorcloth and probably a tad bit more $...

Spring is Springing!

Sap season is in full swing in Vermont ....The snow is gradually melting we have 1-2 feet instead of 3-4 feet in the back yard. May see the ground very soon with the beautiful weather we have on tap this week....lots of vitamin D.

We finished this lovely "Allover Teardrop Design" on the left, in 3 different greens . It's finished size is 75 x 130. It's going in a kitchen in Maryland. Matching their granite counter tops perfectly.

Our next project is matching this lovely homes decor(photo on right)with a floorlcoth that will be an exact size to fit the corner under the table. Where in sample"mode" at the moment and am waiting their thoughts on some new pineapple designs.

Our next show is in Hartford Ct in April 23,24,25th The Historical Home Show at the Expo Center. It's a perfect opportunity to see our floorcloths!

Venetian Tile 5ft Hexagon

Do you know when you just can't keep up with your life sometimes it's a little overwhelming.The reason you ask? wellllll
I could say "we" but that would be unfair to my husband really I decided to get two puppy's...it's a good reason why my life seems so disjointed! Don't you think!

We're very busy designing and producing(me and the puppy's) .I've just started making a lovely Allover Damask in 3 different shades of greens it match's my clients granite counter tops perfectly and they are very excited, the finished size will be 6ft3in x 10ft 10inches . I'm busy designing a new pineapple design for a lovely historic home in Massachusetts. It's sorta of an odd shape fitting snug into a corner. Will be a challenging project. Just starting to work on the details of a 12 ft runner from a delightful client in Indiana she's always wanted a floorcloth and just built a new home so this is her dream! A pleasure....

On February 25-28 I will be at The New England Home Show in Boston at the Trade Center
it's a very large event with lots of fantastic home improvement/renovation types of things. It also has a small (80 ) crafts exhibition, for the first time. Please, if your interested in seeing my floorcloths in person come to the show! Would be a pleasure to meet you.

On April 23-25 I will be at the Historic Home show at The Connecticut Expo Center in Hartford CT.It also includes the Designer Craftsman Show . It's really full of fabulous antiques,crafts and everything that has to do with your Historic, home mark your calendar!

Somehow time has just escaped me as far as this blog goes . Not sure how everyone keeps up with not only blogs but facebook now tweeter personally it's everything I can do to keep up with e-mails....sorry you won't be finding me on facebook or tweeter anytime soon!
Holidays were really busy had a wonderful family Holiday with my family then my husbands mother and father's 50th wedding anniversary that brought his whole family together for like 5 days wooohaaa lots of food and cooking.
January 3 rd rolls by and was catch up time work wise , the relaxing after the holidays has yet to stop by my house....
We packed up and sent off the Hexagon "Venetian Tile Design" and the Octagon "Wildflowers Design" please go to my clients gallery and they are posted for your viewing
Meanwhile, were working on a 8x10 Feathers and Berries ,3x8 Runner in the French Country design and another Feathers and Berries 4x6. Where busy....yeah!
I have a show coming up in February for all you that live in the New England area it's in Boston
The New England Home Show February 25-28 at the Seaport World trade Center hope you can stop by if your in the area.
Also, The Historical Home Show/Designer Craftsman Show a really fantastic show at the Hartford Expo Center (changed it's home this year last year was in Sturbridge MA) April 23,24,25 mark your calendars . Would love to see at either of the shows.

FIRST SNOW!

Well, yesterday we had the first real snowfall of the year in Vermont where we had more then a dusting.....It's a Winter wonderland today. Just finished the first dog walk of the day down on old route 30 a virtual heaven to walk dogs and it was truly beautiful this morning!. We have a 14 week old puppy we just adopted from a liter of 8 thrown on the side of the road in Arkansas. We love him to death and Charlie if you read an earlier newsletter we adopted in May same sort of situation but from Tennessee and he LOVES his new brother. Endless hours of playing . They we're tentative with the snow at first BUT now well they love it and they've already bellied up to the snow bar!
This Fall has brought lots of business most in the form of Octagons as you've probably already read from the previous blogs . I am just finishing (final tweaks) another Octagon in the Wildflowers design I will post it to my next blog. This week I will begin a Hexagon in the Venetian tile design
and starting canvas for a larger floorcloth to do simultaneously in the Feathers and Berries design which will be going to Gainesville FL big football town I believe!

Whats going on in Vt....

Grapes and Ivy Octagon finished ! We've done a textured border as you can see with a parchment style base coat all using a color that matched Marilyn's kitchen walls. I will start urethaning it tomorrow then off to Maryland.

I'm shrinking canvas for the next 2 projects as we speak. Another 6 ft Octagon with the Wildflowers design in colors that match Beth's,I believe, sun room.
Also, a 3x5 Borders and Squares design for Jeff in
Maryland we'll be using similar colors to the actual one you see on my web site along with a couple of colors that come very close to their walls in the enteway hopefully finished for Christmas......

Talking with Dee from Ct she's thinking about a Venetian tile design in a Hexagon shape
thats going to be fun!.

My most recent inquiry is from a lovely women in Florida with a wonderful Arts and Crafts style
home so we get to make one of my Arts and Crafts style designs in a nice 8x10 floorcloth
I can't wait ...one of my most favorite styles.

Also, working on some new designs in between

Octagon Marathon!

The Autumn newsletter went out last week and received a flurry of activity . Been
very busy sending samples and making samples for new customers. I've made
progress in creating an Octagon in the Grapes and Ivy design. We've decided the grapes and
leaves will drape" sorta speak' toward the center. The border itself is a textured effect in a nice deep green color. The base color is a parchment effect in very pale greens one of which is her wall color. Shes really thrilled which is always nice to hear the whole effect will fit very nicely in her kitchen.

The next floorcloth on deck will be the Wildflowers design another Octagon. I've just sent out
a sample to her using the colors she picked that matched her decor . The flowers will be in reds and blues with green ferns. Half the sample had the background swirls and half without. It will be interesting to see, as with everyone I send samples to, which they choose....

Happy Halloween

Halloween is upon us once again, the start of the Holiday season as I see it....
Where I live our home is set up on a hill and our driveway is pretty long I always imagine
if I was REALLY into the ghosts and goblins scene our place would be the perfect spook driveway with a huge bubbling cauldron at the top with witches stirring it! and goblins coming out of the woods with eerie music...we'd be the talk of the town for the kids...
On to Thanksgiving and Christmas...never to early to start that Christmas shopping and what better gift then a floorcloth or make your own I have a 20% sale on blank floorcloths good till Nov 30th 2009. you could make one and give it as a gift.....
I've just begun another Octagon Floorcloth 80 inches in diameter it will be the Grapes and Ivy design in colors matching my clients decor she lives in MD and her name is Marilyn..love it.
I have another Octagon on tap my client and I are ironing out the details with a few samples so she can see what they would look like in her kitchen.

Whats doing in my studio

Just finished two floorcloths and should be shipping this week and Octagon 7.5 in diameter
similar to the Red Paisley Octagon on my web site but with no Paisleys. Another 5x7 basic checkerboard matching the pale yellow walls of a client in VA. It must be Octagon month because I have 2 more to make after these go out......
I've just begun creating some new designs and will hopefully have them posted in the not too distant future. So, stay tuned...You have any thoughts on designs you'd like to see,please let me know!

Autumn in Vermont

Columbus day weekend is by far one of the busiest weekends in the State of Vermont....The foliage is at it's peak or very close to it. The restaurants and Inns are usually full to capacity. Stores have their annual tent sales and craft fairs are everywhere. It is the perfect time to visit Vermont and see all the wonderful artisians and their work, you can usually visit their studios if you call ahead...

At the moment you'd be able to see me finishing two large floorcloths a traditional black and pale yellow checkerboard pattern for a clients foyer in Virgina, we matched the pale yellow color exactly to her wall colors. I've also just finshed an Octagon with just the colors of the Paisley pattern clients have opted out of the design itself we again matched their wall colors so it blends nicely in their kitchen. When both of them are on their way we will be starting another Octagon with the Grapes and Ivy pattern using colors to match this clients kitchen also. I'm always reading other peoples blogs, like most of us do, I guess and wonder...well are they really personal notes or should they be business orientated. ...I presume, maybe I shouldn't that you'd like to hear about my floorcloths but then again maybe a little personal touch here and their would be a little more catching.......What are your thoughts on blogging?
The other thing about blogs is they DO spark my curiosity so I always click on someones blog but 9 times out of 10 the persons blog has not been written in since gosh knows when and I always think gosh why have a blog if your not going to use it........ I was pretty excited when I first started this blog...Well, you can see I have fallen completely into the realm I detest the most "why have a blog if your not going to use it"......Thus my new start and commitment to you my clients and friends to blogging once a week....I hope you help me stick to this schedule...Blog Back ..love to hear from you!

South Carolina

Trip to South Carolina with my diva girlfriends as we refer to ourselves was a really good time. We spent one day in Charleston touring the Historic French Quarter felt like I was in Europe! I loved it
I'll definitely be going back. Great plantation homes the perfect spot for a floorcloth...

We're just finishing up a Primitive style floorcloth with and old aged look and the border is filled
with twigs/berries /stars and crows 11x7.5 ft a lot of fun. Soon to be posted on my site.

We'll be in the next issue of New England Home magazine Sept/Oct. in the "It's Personal column by the editor....Kyle Hoepner.

Diva Reunion

Every Summer 5 girlfriends from High School and I gather together for a few days and just have a really GREAT time. Each year we travel to someplace different, this year were going to Pawleys Island S.C.. Where the first hammock was made, or so I'm told.....have to check that out. Our biggest priority's are talking, talking and more talking with a lot of laughing thrown in and a little or maybe a lot of chocolate.
This years trip will undoubtedly take us to Charleston for a day trip where we'll do one of the things we all do the best, shopping of course and eating! We'll definitely be touring some of the Old Plantation homes and I'm hoping to run into some floorcloths along the way. You never know where a new design idea will crop up or maybe even a new client. A vacation is always good to prime the creative juices....and my friends are definitely my largest support group, we all need that in our life.
